Thus, I need to move it. For those of you that RSVP'd to attend the 7/25 meetup, we've decided to move it to 8/1. If you didn't RSVP but want to attend on one of those two days, let me know as well. Same time and place. I will send out a couple of reminders in advance. Sorry for mixup. We have two web servers (physical machines) that are behind a load balancer. I have to provide access to a Windows share through the web servers. DAV should work fine but I don't know about the locking mechanisms of DAV. AFAIK a lock file is configured in the Apache configuration but that needs to be on a local file system. So how can I sync the locking between the two servers? Another thing is the authentication file. Would it be a problem storing the password file on the Windows share so that I only have one password file? I am using Ubuntu Jaunty and used the installer to create the encrypted root file system etc. So everything is nice and peachy when the system boots using the distribution kernel. The system asks for the passphrase to unlock the root partition. But I don't want to use the distribution version of the kernel for several reasons. Most important I don't want to use the initrd. So far so good. As usual, I downloaded the latest kernel source tarball from kernel.org and configured it, compiled it and installed it. It has all the device mapper stuff in it that is needed (not as module) and also everything from the cryptographic API. But for some reason I don't get the question for the passphrase during boot?! All I get is a kernel panic because the root cannot be found?! I am using basically the same boot configuration in GRUB as I use for the Ubuntu kernel: title Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.30.3 uuid 13228aa4-f8a3-46b7-aeb9-fc662746b4a6 kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.30.3 root=/dev/mapper/obelix-root ro What am I missing here. Google and other search engines are not helpful here at all. I have the feeling some tool or script is missing that unlocks the root partition but can't find anything useful. cu hps -- /"\ | Peter Senft \ / ASCII ribbon campaign | E-Mail : peter.senft@hpss.de X against HTML mail | FIDO : 2:2476/847.34 / \ | ICQ : 62090394 From peter.senft at hpss.de Wed Jul 29 13:37:19 2009 From: peter.senft at hpss.de (Peter Senft) Date: Tue Jul 28 23:06:37 2009 Subject: [Charlug] Kernel For Encrypted Root In-Reply-To: <4A70853E.8080400@hpss.de> References: <4A70853E.8080400@hpss.de> Message-ID: <4A7088CF.8030005@hpss.de> Hi @all, just found the reason... there are some files in the initrd that are needed to decrypt the root partition (askpass, libcrypt, etc.). They need to be good with both "under the hood" type of stuff (lower level framework) as well as UI/AJAX, etc. They are looking for someone that has a deep ecommerce background primarily.
