This doesn't really seem like a VMWare issue as much as probably a
32bit/64bit conflict of some sort. What kind of hardware are you running?
I have VMWare Server 1.0.3 running on Ubuntu x64 (Dell PE2950 Quad-core
Xeon chip with 4GB RAM) and don't experience any performance issues. I
haven't yet upgraded to 1.0.4, but I can't imagine that's where your
problem is.
Also, I'm not sure exactly what the function of the option is, but you
might try this from the VMWare console: Right-click the VM and select
"Upgrade virtual machine"
As a last resort, you might consider this. Do a proper shutdown on the
virtual install of Windows, then temporarily relocate all the files from
the VM's directory on the host box EXCEPT for the .vmx and the .vmdk
files. Fire the VM back up and see what happens.
Please do let me know if any of these resolutions work for you so I'll
know what to add to my documentation in case I ever run into such issues.
Best of luck.
