Linux Mint 3.0 "Cassandra" has been released. I downloaded it straight from the html link at DistroWatch; took about 25 minutes to get ~700MB. Mint is pretty close to perfection, if you know how to tweak it to your preferences. I installed it from the live CD. Everything was properly detected on my Athlon 1 GHz box. After installing Mint, the first thing I did was to remove the slab-style MintMenu from the Panel, then add Mint Menu Bar by right clicking the panel bar and selecting the "Add to Panel" dialog. This got rid of the slab-style menu, replacing it with a more conventional GNOME menu. I put a quicklink to Firefox on the Panel. I right-clicked desktop to change the background to Cassandra Blue. The default Cassandra Green is a bit washed out, but Cassandra Blue gives just the right depth and crispness to the display. I changed the resolution from 1280x1024 to 1024x768, much more to my liking (System > Preferences > Screen Resolution). There are two ways to install
software: by Synaptic Package Manager and with the new Mint Software Portal. I installed GnomeBaker, Brasero, VLC, and Frozen Bubble with Synaptic. I installed Opera browser from the Mint Software Portal. Synaptic Package Manager is available from the menu, under System > Administration. The Mint Software Portal is linked on the default homepage when Firefox first opens; it's also a button on the Bookmark toolbar of Firefox. If you have a video card with 128MB of RAM, you can try Beryl 3D, which comes installed on Mint Cassandra, as does Envy, the ATI/nVidia drivers for Ubuntu. I can play just about any audio and video file I want, anything at youtube. Xine-based Totem plays DVD movies flawlessly. Mint just works, out of the box. If you want to have an easy time learning gnome, Mint does gnome best. It doesnt get much easier than this.
Give yourself a treat, and try Linux Mint 3.0 "Cassandra". It has an elegance that you will appreciate. Everything just works. Awesome.
