The SPA-1001 has a network port and a single "FXS" port to plug in a
telephone. The SPA-1001 is the only hardware you'd need, you'll only
need a provider to get yourself connected to the 'POTS' telephone
system. Many VoIP providers allow you to bring your own device or 'BYOD'
for short. The Gizmo Project has a SIP gateway, so you can register
there and get quite a bit of free calling. As an added bonus, they offer
a free software client for Linux, so you can call from your telephone
connected to the SPA to anyone using the Gizmo software.
I've become quite the VoIP hobbyist in my testing with Asterisk at my
place of employment over the past year and I'm getting ready to rollout
about 40 IP phones across the east coast to our branch offices, so if
you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
