Tuesday evening CharLUG meeting
January 16, 2007
Ken Johnson brought a "Penguin Crossing" roadsign that we placed outside
Baucom-Davis' offices to signify the meeting place.
A somewhat disappointing turnout of only four members attended the meeting.
The movie */Revolution OS/* was shown followed by general discussion.
Pat Davis suggested Computel and Slayton Computers might be good
possibilities to sponsor an Installfest at their locations. I will
contact both to explore any interest and pass the results on.
Pat also brought up LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Program) as a good
candidate for a workshop/demo. He also said Dave Johnston (who is a
member of the LTSP project and lives in the Charlotte area) could be a
good source for a presentation/demo. (We have talked about the
possibility of doing a workshop on this in one of the computer labs at
CPCC for a Saturday meeting project in the near future.) Perhaps Dave
Johnston would be interested in contributing to this workshop.
Pat also suggested (again) that a demo of MythTV would be interesting.
Anyone using MythTV interested in giving a demo?
Ken Johnson suggested we use the CharLUG website to solicit
used/abandoned equipment that could be refurbished and raffled off at
the meetings to help increase attendance. He pointed out that it is
illegal to put old computers on the curb for trash pickup) He has had a
lot of success revitalizing <400Mhz P3 machines with VectorLinux.
VectorLinux provides browser, email, office tools, multimedia including
good DVD playback, etc. on a box that won't run any of the current
Windows offerings. Pat pointed out that if we give away computers with
Linux installed (or raffle them) we should consider offering a support
mailing list to the new computer owners so they don't get lost in Linux.
Pat believes we should concentrate on one Linux distribution rather than
six or seven. He feels that it should be Red Hat Enterprise Linux/
CentOS as it is a enterprise strength, commercially viable distribution
that businesses have heard of. I felt that our scope must be wider than
just commercial applications and must include home and SOHO use of Linux
and Open Source Software.
It was suggested ( I believe by Pat) that establishing and publishing an
agenda for the next four to six meetings would help in getting our
attendance up.
Pierre has a question concerning the difference between an audio "midi"
device and an audio "sequencer" device. If anyone knows about these
things please get back with Pierre at phma at phma.optus.nu
<mailto:phma at phma.optus.nu>. Pierre is planning a trip to Europe and
wants to know the best email server set-up to allow him to access his
email while traveling but still have them on the server when he returns.
Any suggestions here would be appreciated.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45PM.
