I am attempting to upgrade from Dapper to Edgy to Feisty. So far I have
done the following:
*Install all Dapper updates.
*Reboot the computer.
*Edit /etc/apt/sources.list.
*Download the package lists.
*Hit the update button.
*Make a few minor changes.
*Hit the commit button.
The computer then downloaded stuff for at least half an hour and started
installing packages. During this time, konqueror stopped working, as
kio_http disappeared, presumably to be replaced in another package.
Adept said "There was an error committing packages", or something like
that, and disappeared. I tried rerunning adept, which gave me an error
and told me to run apt-setup, which didn't exist. I rebooted and logged
in and found the following:
The X server displayed a video test pattern, not a kdm prompt, when I
logged out. If I try running startx, it quits.
When I log in, it continuously gives a permission error trying to
execute /dev/null. I hit ^C and it stops.
apt was not installed.
/var/cache/apt/archives is full of deb packages. I managed to install apt.
aptitude runs, and appears to give meaningful information, but I don't
know how to use it. dselect ditto.
The network is down. Attempting to bring it up results in a "No such
device" error.
Running kernel is 2.6.15-28. I haven't tried booting something else.
I am running LVM and LUKS. Both are intact.
If you can help me, please call me at 704-509-6230 (home) or
704-596-6088 (work). I am leaving for work and will be there for several
hours. Chausie's network being down, I can't ssh in, but if you can talk
me out of this mess tomorrow, please call me tonight.
Pierre
