Hi Don,
I read at the CharLUG website that youre checking out Vector Linux 5.8. I know you will be pleased with VL's speed, capability, and stability.

It's amazing that VL will play DVDs on a 350mhz computer. To do that, you must use xine movie player, not the higher-end alternative MPlayer. xine has sync bugs attributable to the xine engine, xine-lib-1.1.2, the default version in VL 5.8. I am referring to a noticeable lack of synchronization between audio and video in DVD playback. The developers of xine provide a newer version of the xine engine that fixes these sync bugs, xine-lib-1.1.4, which is available in VL's testing repository.

I download the newer xine engine (.tlz file) from testing repo, cd to the download location, then, as root, use the command "upgradepkg nameofpackage" to install it. Often, xine will not open after this upgrade. One remedy to this situation is to upgrade libgcrypt to libgcrypt-1.2.3 as this seems to fix xine. So if xine wont open after upgrading the xine engine, also upgrade libgcrypt, available in the patches repo.

xine has the same problem across all distros. For example, Totem-xine movie player in Linux Mint 2.2 Bianca has the sync bugs, and will not be fixed until Ubuntu Feisty Fawn is released. You dont have to wait for it to be fixed in VectorLinux: the VL devs hustle to fix things like that.

  Happy Vectoring,
  Ken
