[Charlug] change video card, need tutorial

I just tried to swap out a video card on a p3/450 system with xubuntu 6.10, but it wasnt detected and all i got was a prompt in the end.  Can anyone find a tutorial on how to change a vid card, get the os to detect it.  Must I recompile, must I delete old card adapter, must I edit xorg.conf? 

old card:  STB Permedia 2 (rev 11) (IBM FRU 01K4342)

new card:  NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 4X AGP (IBM FRU 19K5340)
