For HTTP traffic, a quick way is just to use the W3C's validator:

http://validator.w3.org/

If your server is working, you'll get results and see the source of your 
page.

Aside from that, I usually SSH to my web server at EV1 and from there 
try to telnet to whatever port I'm trying to access on a particular host.
